The first Earth Day took place back in 1970. Since then, every year on April 22nd, we celebrate our planet Earth and the environment we live in. In addition to celebrating we discuss ways on how to improve the life of our planet. This day is especially important because it affects the lives we live day to day. Although legally acts have been passed and agencies put it place, the question never gets old as to what we can do to help celebrate Earth Day every day.
Education
Educate yourself on what recycling programs are near you. Find out what your town accepts for recycled items. If your town doesn't recycle, check out your surrounding towns. Some may offer a pass to drop off recycling at their town dump.
You may recycle but do others around you? Encourage your friends to recycle at home and at school. Check out what your school does to recycle and see if there are any committees or clubs you can join to teach others about recycling.
Become an activist. Let your state representatives know what you are doing by writing a letter on how you are making a difference. Others may follow your need and what you are doing could have a bigger affect than you realize.
Activity Ideas to Celebrate
Print out coloring pages that show the outlines of Earth. Color, decorate, and hang them on your front door for others to see you are celebrating. There are many links that share print outs if you search online for Earth Day.
For your little ones, how about making cotton ball clouds? Have your kids draw the shape of a cloud on a piece of construction paper. Cut the shape of the cloud out. Put a pile of cotton balls in the middle of the table and using glue, supervise your little ones stretching and gluing cotton balls on the cut out cloud. Give them eyes to glue on made from paper or other accessories in your home. Tape a ruler to the back of the cut out when finished so your kids can take their clouds outside, hold the stick, and run with the wind. While your kids play, teach them the importance of clean air and what they can do to be better about conserving the air we breathe.
Hand wreaths are fun idea to help celebrate. Using construction paper, have your kids trace their hands about a dozen times on different colored construction paper. Cut the hands out. Now take a paper plate, and place it right side up in front of you. Glue each bottom palm of hand around the plate overlapping each one just a little to create your wreath. When the glue has dried, take the wreathes and have your kids write in the center their name and what they plan on doing to help care for the Earth this year.
Express Yourself! Make an Earth Day t-shirt to wear and spread your support! Use fabric markers to draw a picture and write a saying like "Save Our Planet" or "Team Earth". You can wear it all year round!
Let's hear it for planet Earth!
