It never fails. Just a few short weeks (or even days) into summer vacation, the dreaded "I'm bored" statement is spoken in homes across the country. With weeks of summer left, what do you do when the boredom complaints start rolling in? Read on to find out.
- Go to the zoo - Head out to the zoo or aquarium and see what the animals are doing to keep busy and cool.
- Have a picnic - Pack sandwiches, drink boxes, fruit, chips, and something sweet and head out for a picnic at a local park or your own back yard. Don't forget lawn chairs and a Frisbee or outdoor game. Raining outside? Spread a tablecloth or blanket on the living room floor and picnic inside.
- Find a festival - Check the internet or your local newspaper for festivals and events happening in your city, then head out to explore the fun things in store.
- See what's up at the library - There's always a ton of stuff going on at public libraries for kids and families and summer is no exception. Check the calendar of events on your library's website to get the scoop.
- Strength in numbers - Kids all over are bored so plan a play date with other local kids and fight the boredom together.
- Get crafty - Whip up some homemade craft dough and have fun making fun shapes and ornaments. Or make treats for outdoor friends by stringing popcorn or dried fruits or spread peanut butter on stale bagels, dip in birdseed, and hang like ornaments from trees & shrubs.
- Play the day away - Have everyone pick their favorite and have a game marathon. Or put together a jigsaw puzzle.
- Walk it off & get in touch with nature - Get online to locate a local or state park you haven't visited yet and walk the nature trails. Check out the birds, trees, and critters and get some good exercise at the same time.
- Help someone out - Find a local organization and volunteer to help out walking dogs, helping the elderly, delivering meals, or doing yardwork.
- Read all about it - Spend time together reading the book aloud or read it separately and come together to discuss. Talk about what you liked about the story and characters.
- Shake things up - Keep things fresh and interesting by rearranging the bedroom furniture one day, the living room furniture the next.
